Project THEM
We are so excited to announce our pilot program Project THEM, Trans Humanistic Empowerment Movement.
THEM is a homage to the they/them/theirs pronouns that many transgender/nonbinary people use. Project THEM has been a collaborative effort that has grown out of a desire to create a safe space for trans people to be their truest selves.
A Four-Part Start
The outline for Project THEM is a four-part program consisting of:
- Support Groups– Foremost is to start a support group for trans/nonbinary/questioning teens in the greater Greensboro area. This will need to be a virtual group in order to ensure that we are protecting everyone during the ongoing pandemic. We will also be offering a support group for the parents of trans teens to support them as they support their children. Support groups not only create a space where people can feel welcomed and safe to discuss what is happening in their lives, they also empower the participants to have a positive effect on others in the group. We would like to point out that a teen’s participation in the group DOES NOT mean that we will be contacting their parent to participate in the parent’s group. Both groups will be kept separate in order to honor the privacy those who may not be ready, or for whom it may not be safe to disclose to their parents. All support groups will be provided at no cost to the participants.
- Community Outreach– We want to spread the word to as many people as possible that Project THEM is here and it is available. We also want to advocate against discrimination based on trans identity. And so it is that we will work to speak to community organizations to promote Project THEM. We also hope to have promotional material such as flyers, stickers and t-shirts.
- Case Management– Frequently, people who identify as trans face a lack of support in multiple areas of their lives. We have dedicated interns who will be working to connect participants to various resources throughout the community based on their particular needs.
- One-on-One Therapy– For those participants who find that they need more than the once weekly support groups we have the option of individualized therapy. This may be provided by our staff, or by our graduate interns at a reduced rate.
Project THEM Mission
It is our intention to provide the highest quality of care to all of our participants in an affirming setting. It is our goal to ensure that these service are delivered in a culturally competent manner that recognizes every person’s individual right to decide for themselves how they wish to identify and treats each person with the dignity and respect that is their birthright as a human being. We honor all people and we intend to make Project THEM a safe space for discussion and services.
Go Fund Me
We acknowledge that Project THEM will, by it’s nature, require some funding and we are diligently applying for loans through various philanthropic organizations. We need funds for technology advancements such as a higher level of internet service in order to connect with participants virtually. We need new laptops to help us to manage the support groups. We need money to fund our outreach and money to help defray the cost for those who may need therapeutic services and have no ability to pay. We ask that you take a moment to go to our Project THEM Go Fund Me page and read about our efforts. We also ask that you read all the way through to the thank you so that we can offer our support to the members of the trans community who donated their time and talents to creating and digitizing our logo. But, mostly, we ask that you make a donation knowing that your financial support can translate into real time support for vulnerable people. Together, we can make a difference.
